VMware has released VMware View for iPad, a free iOS client for controlling a server-based Windows desktop. Similar to Citrix Receiver for iPad, released a year ago, VMware View controls a virtual machine running on VMware View enterprise server software. The new free iPad connects uses the PCoIP protocol, a thin client that provides full resolution, full frame rate graphics, but is also optimized to provide acceptable graphics over slow connections. Because of the use of PCoIP, VMware View for iPad requires VMware View 4.6 or later.
The iPad app supports some iPad touch gestures, including tap for a mouse click, two-finger click for right-click, and one-finger drag. Users can also displays an on-screen virtual touchpad to control the cursor within Windows. A three-finger tap brings up the on-screen keyboard. The app also works with external Bluetooth keyboards.
VMware View for iPad is available through the Apple App Store.
