Smith Micro Software is shipping StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for Mac, a major new Snow Leopard-compatible version of the cross-platform compression utility. In addition to improving lossless compression of Mac and Windows audio and image files, the new version branches out into the realm of automated transfer of files.
For compressed files that are still too big to email, StuffIt 2010 can redirect the files to a new StuffIt Connect cloud-based web service. Recipients receive an email containing the link where they can download the sent files in a secure manner. StuffIt Connect can share and send up to 2 GB of files at one time, using 512bit RC4 encryption and password protection.
The new SmartSend feature can automatically send files to email, if they are small, or StuffIt Connect, if large. Users select files, choose Stuff and Mail in a Finder menu, and the files are compressed and sent in the appropriate manner. Users can access and create invitations to share content from any Internet-connected device, including iPhones and other smart phones.
Other new features in StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for Mac include:
- The ability to create disk .dmg images. Select a group of files and choose Create Disk Image from a menu in the Finder.
- Plug-In Support for compressing photos in iPhoto and Aperture. Image compression is also improved in StuffIT Deluxe 2010. Lossless compression of JPG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, and other 24-bit image formats
- Improved Audio Compression - StuffIt Deluxe 2010 introduces optimized compression of WAV audio files, used in Windows audio applications.
StuffIt also can decompress other Windows, Mac, and Unix compression formats, such as zip.
StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for Mac is $79.99. Registered users of any previous version of StuffIt Deluxe or StuffIt Standard for Mac can upgrade to the full StuffIt Deluxe 2009 for Mac for just $29.99.
