Parallels Transporter moves PC to Mac for a buck

Monday, May 23, 2011

Parallels as made Parallels Transporter available at the Mac App store for .99 cents for a limited time. The software automates the transfer of documents and bookmarks from a Windows PC to Mac OS X. Parallels said the software will eventually have a $40 retail price.

The company had software called Parallels Transporter bundled with Parallels Desktop, to copy documents from Windows PCs to Window running in a virtual machine. However, Parallels says that this Parallels Transporter can be used to move data to Mac OS X itself, and not just a virtual machine. Like older versions, it can also moves Windows programs and other files into a virtual machine on your Mac-even if Parallels Desktop is not installed. Parallels Desktop can be installed at a later time to run Windows and access the Windows applications.

If you've tried Parallels Transporter what you think of it.

Reader gives thumbs-up on Parallels Transporter app

Cesar Guimaraes in Brazil responded to our report of Parallels Transporter Mac app for moving Windows files to a Mac:

I used the new $0.99 Parallels Transporter (PT) from the Mac App Store to move a Windows XP instance running in Boot Camp from my old iMac Core 2 Duo to a Parallels VM running on my shining new iMac Core i5. Everything works as advertised.

PT moves data from your old Windows machine to your Mac AND from your old Windows machine to a new Parallels VM it creates on a single pass. The VM is created in case you want to run your old Windows programs virtualized under Parallels Desktop on the Mac.

Please be aware that if you have more than one user in Windows, PT will move data from each existing user folder under " C:\Documents And Settings" into individual user subfolders created below a folder named "Parallels Migrated Documents" on the currently logged on user's Documents folder on the Mac. From there it's your job to drag and drop data between each user's subfolder to the corresponding Documents folder for each user inside your Windows VM.

I have also used PT to move data from a Sony Vaio notebook to a brand new Core i5 MacBook Pro and just ignored the VM created. I was able to open all my migrated files on the MacBook Pro using Microsoft Office 2011 without any problem. One thing I'm still verifying is data from iTunes on the Vaio and the corresponding folders on the Mac, so I cannot tell yet if my iTunes Music Library will work on the Macbook Pro as it used to do on the Vaio (haven't fired iTunes on the Macbook yet, as I'm still comparing folders and files from each machine.

Both migrations were performed by connecting Windows machines and Mac machines by Ethernet cable and both migrations involved near 100 GB data each. It took between 60 and 90 minutes to have each migration finished.
