Parallels has released Parallels Server for Mac 4.0, Mac Mini Edition (US$299), a scaled-down version of the virtualization server software that supports two virtual machines of up to two CPUs and four GB RAM for each virtual machine. (The standard, $2000 version of Parallels Server for Mac 4.0 supports up to 12 CPUs and 64 GB RAM for each virtual machine.)
Parallels Server can run 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux servers, as well as Mac OS X Server, in virtual machines. As with the full version, Parallels Server 4.0 Mac mini Edition comes with a management console that can control multiple servers. Administrators can enter guest console mode from the host operating system. Parallels Server 4 also includes a feature called Express Installation express installation for several versions of Windows and Linux, enabling virtual machines to be created in unattended mode.
Last January, Apple discontinued the Xserve, leaving the Mac Pro and the Mac mini the two most popular Apple platforms for server virtualization. Parallels Server is the only server virtualization software for Mac hosts.
