Office update may fix OS X 10.8.4 file sharing bug and Outlook issues

Microsoft has released an update to Office that may fix a problem readers have been reporting about saving files to a Windows server from within Word. The update, called Office for Mac 2011 14.3.6, also fixes several problems with Outlook 2011 for Mac, including sending and syncing messages.

According to Microsoft, the update "fixes an issue that causes Word to be unable to save files to an SMB share," a problem readers have reported after upgrading their Macs to OS X 10.8.4.

The Office 14.3.6 update, which Microsoft says "fixes critical issues," also fixes at least two problems in Outlook:

  • Message sending in Microsoft Outlook for Mac

This update fixes an issue in which Outlook repeatedly tried to send messages that exceeded certain server-side size limits from the Outbox. Now, messages that exceed these size limits are put in the local Drafts folder after three unsuccessful attempts to send the messages.

  • Syncing a folder from which lots of messages were deleted in Outlook for Mac

This update fixes an issue in which syncing a folder from which many messages were deleted on another client frequently caused Microsoft Outlook for Mac to freeze.

Readers have been reporting other problems with Outlook 2011 after updating to OS X 10.8.4 (for instance, here and here).

The update requires Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.1.0 or a later, and can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site or from within any Office application (Help>Check for Updates).

If you've tried the Office 2011 14.3.6 update if it fixes any problems.

Update: Several readers report that the14.3.6 update does not fix sync problems with OS X 10.8.4
