Mavericks and AD network home folder issue

Dave Rubin reports having the problem described in the article "Corrupting Access Rights on Mavericks Home Folders on Windows Server" on an Active Directory network. The problem prevents the Mac from mounting the server-based home folder. Rubin describes it:

I am seeing this issue. During creation of user profiles in network home folders on a Windows server 2008R2 machine (on a user's first login to a Mac), the contents of the profile is corrupted in some way. During subsequent logins, the client fails to mount the home folder. If I create a user and manually add a profile to their network home folder (before their first login) they are working OK. I have not found a solution yet.
