Mavericks 10.9.1 fix OS X email snafus but Outlook not mentioned

Apple released OS X Mavericks 10.9.1, an update that focuses on number of problems with e-mail as well as fixes for Safari and security. However, there is no word from Apple on whether the update addresses Outlook problems that occur with Marvericks, some of which are similar to those found in Apple Mail.

Apple also released a separate "OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 Update for MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Late 2013)," described by Apple as including "all updates from OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 plus system specific enhancements to improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac."

OS X 10.9.1 is the second Mavericks update to focus on email bugs. Apple's "Mail Update for Mavericks," released last month, was a patch aimed at fixing the Mail app's problems with Gmail and "additional fixes that improve the compatibility and stability of Mail." However, Gmail problems where not resolved with that update, and are addressed again in the OS X 10.9.1.

Apple's tech support site lists three email fixes in the new update, though there may be more:

  • Improved support for Gmail in OS X Mail, and fixes for users with custom Gmail settings
  • Improves the reliability of Smart Mailboxes and search in Mail
  • Fixes an issue that prevented contact groups from working properly in Mail

Problems with Mavericks and Outlook Mac 2011 were not fixed with the special Mail Update and are not mentioned by Apple. These problems include duplicate mail (which readers have also reported occurs with Mavericks Mail and Outlook.com), and problems with Outlook's folders. mavericks-outlook-tips.html

The Safari fixes include issues with the auto-filling of forms and voiceover compatibility with Facebook.
