Reader gets Error -50 with Lion-to-Windows file copy

Thursday, May 10, 2012

Ateet Dave reports a problem with Lion 10.7.3 not being able to copy files to a Windows server:

My friend is running a server using Windows Home Server 2011. After a recent update to OSX Lion 10.7.3 he can no longer copy files to the SMB share on the server. He get's this error: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." He and I have exhausted all ideas on how to fix the problem.

He can still read from the server and even create folders on the server from his MacBook Pro running 10.7.3. However he cannot copy any files over from his MBP to the WHS.

Note that the new Lion 10.7.4 update fixes a problem "that may prevent files from being saved to an SMB server," according to Apple. If you've seen this problem

Readers says Outlook Outbox folder disappeared

Thursday, May 10, 2012

David Hall reports that his Outlook Mac Outbox folder has disappears and reappears randomly:

I have lost the Outlook for Mac (14.2.1) Outbox folder in the folder window pane and can't seem to get it back. I would like to be able to stop emails being sent.

I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8. For a while, before the last Microsoft Office for Mac update I could see the outbox show up in the left hand folder panel while something was being sent out. If I caught the email while it was in that folder, I could stop sending it. However, that "Outbox" folder disappeared after an email was sent. After the last upgrade this folder in the folder window no longer showed up, but a sending 'progress' bar at the right-hand bottom part of the Outlook screen showed up. There was no way I could stop sending an email from that bar.

However, yesterday, the Outbox showed up in the left hand folder window again while I was sending a picture. I do not believe we have received a Microsoft update this last week. So, I am not sure why it shows up sometimes and not others.

Port 139 tip for slow file sharing works for Lion

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Darryl Luther reports that a suggestion for SMB file sharing in Snow Leopard also works in Lion to speed up SMB access to a network attached storage device:

I ran across your site today while searching for a solution to a problem that I've had with OS X (Snow Leopard and now Lion) ever since I got a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+. My Windows PCs can access any of the shares I have on it at lightning speed, but until today OS X connections were slow. Very slow. I tried both AFP and CIFS and found AFP to be marginally better. In all instances Lion was faster than Snow Leopard, but still painfully slow.

Today I happened to find your site and the tip about accessing SMB shares on port 139. I figured I'd give it a try and, wow! The speed difference in OS X is incredible. I haven't tested Snow Leopard yet, but my Lion installation can now access the ReadyNAS with the same lightning speed as Windows.

One easy example: before accessing the ReadyNAS via port 139 I could not browse through a folder of pictures with spacebar preview. The pictures would never load in the preview window. Now when accessing via port 139 previewing is nearly as fast as viewing pictures locally. I should note that the ReadyNAS and the OS X iMac are on a gigabit LAN so that definitely helps, but the biggest factor was your port 139 tip. Thanks!
